Free in the City

It's a recession!  Here's how you can enjoy New York City for free or on the cheap.

Stanten Island Fery
Cost: $0
Sights: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, New Jersey, etc.

Cruise NYC for free!
Take the  Staten Island Ferry from lower Manhattan.  Remain on the entrance area (technically the back of the boat), on the the trip to SI to get a view of the city as the ferry pulls away.   Go to the front on the trip back to Manhattan for the view approaching the skyscrappers.

Best time to go: Right around sunse.  You'll see the sun setting over the sights (mentioned above) as you head to Staten Island.  NYC is lit like a Christmas tree on the way back.

The Bronx Zoo
Cost: Free on Wednesdays
Pros: Didn't you read FREE?  The zoo is actually pay-as-you wish, but you can pay $0 if that's your wish.  You can bring your own food and drinks.

Cons:  They start putting the animals away and closing up at 4:30-- 30 minutes before the zoo closes.   Some animals may not be available for viewing.  The food's a little pricey, but you didn't pay to get in.  So, there should be no complaints.
